If I remember correctly what little I read of it, the "video game" imagery is because the fictional world of the novel is itself a "gamey" world, like a Monster Hunter-type of world with missions and sidequests etc.
Actually Miaomiao's "main mission" that she had to fulfill to escape to the real world (she got sucked in to the novel world after writing a bad review!?) was to bring her "affinity" with ZiQi from -200% to +100%, that's the meat of the show.
And don't worry too much about "figuring out" the ending, the entire fandom has been trying to analyze and understand it too haha
